| Quote: | | Please note that on booking you will be asked to pay a £25 deposit, which is fully refunded within seven to ten working days, to limit non-attendance. You have the option to purchase additional prints after your shoot but are under no obligation. These normally cost £50 for a 7” x 5” and £70 for a 12” x8” but our customers receive a 20% discount. If you pay for additional photographs in advance you get twice the value of photos that you paid for! |
But then again ... looking at those prices it may well be selling "the experience" of another company for a cut. |

My local ASDA installed a portrait studio about two years ago, and every time I pass they have a different offer on. ie. spend £40 on groceries and receive a £25 voucher which covers the sitting and a free 10"x 8".
In true ASDA fashion they even had a BOGOF offer on a 20"x 16" print.
They may not be great, but they're free. |

You talking about the forge?
There was a girl who was already in this shopping centre when asda opened she has since shut down, and moved her business elsewhere. _________________ Jane |

Yes That's the one, The girl who was in the (In Shops market) forge was "Carol Anne" her stuff was/is excellent. But in the East end of Glasgow excellence comes second to price, therefore it's difficult to compete with an Asda loss leader. |

I know this thread is a few months old now, but I was in my local ASDA store (Parkhead Forge) yesterday, and was surprised to discovered that their portrait studio has closed.
looking through the shutters it seems that all displays are still in place, and they've posted a sign apollogising for any inconvenience, promising to fulfill all outstanding orders and offering refunds for any orders they can't complete.
Maybe they weren't doing too well after all. |

| Often people don't value something that comes as a freebie offer in this way, or if they do, they just get a print done for free every time they shop. Our local Sainsbury's used to do this, but I notice they have packed up as well. |

The portrait concessions in ASDA stores in the UK were operated by PCA International (UK) t/a The Portrait Studio. This company is now going into liquidation.
Although ASDA technically has no obligations in relation to this, it does appear they are doing what they can for former Portrait Studio customers.
There will be a news item about this in next Monday's PhotoWeek!
In the States for many years now it has been the norm for the supermarket multiples to have photo shops in-store, and for photo shops to offer portrait services.
Both those trends are established here in the UK. Independent photographers need to be aware that one-hour photo labs and supermarkets will do portraits as well as ID photos, and independent one-hour labs need to be aware that they have strong competition from the supermarket multiples, who already have a larger share of the photo finishing market than they do.
The Portrait Studio may have closed, but portraiture in supermarkets and labs is a phenomenon that's not going to go away. _________________ www.photomart.co.uk

Simon is right, competition won't go away, it's here to stay and it will only increase.
As photographers we should welcome competition because it keeps us on our toes, it promotes our service and it allows us to become 'special' - providing a quality of both product and service that others simply can't provide.
Also, competition is a very good indicator of growth - nobody bothers to compete in areas for which there is no demand, or no growth.
BTW, I think it's good to have members here who are in the supply side of our trade, helps us to keep up to date with new developments... |

Garry you couldn't be more correct!
The hi-key white background bandwagon has finished at long last ... and it's up to us ... the photographers ... to come up with something special that the likes of Asda, Olan Mills & Venture can't recreate ... e.g. location portraits. I know it's out of the comfort zone for many but when it comes to portraits I'm finding more and more customers wanting something in a more natural environment.
The beach, the forrest, the local playground ... anything but a studio!! Customers want it ... so give it to 'em!
Keep yourself nice,
Rob
